Why People Dont Like to Exercise

The five top reasons people use when they don't want to exercise

Why is it that so many Canadians and by extension Americans do not want to exercise?

The author of the book 6 Weeks to a Fit and Fabulous New You, physiotherapist, and the VP of operations at GoodLife Fitness Clubs, Maureen Hagan has worked with thousands of Canadians trying to get them into shape. Hagan is an international award winning fitness guru.

Hagan maintains that there are five top excuses given for not exercising.

The biggest excuse for not exercising Megan finds come from women who are busy with children. They will say that they just do not have time. This group of women is often the first to quit an exercise program when their finances are low. Megan maintains that everyone is busy. It is what is a priority to you that makes up the different of whether you find the time or not to exercise. In other words if exercise is important you will find the way to make the time.

The second excuse is I am tired, what is ironic about this statement is that exercise will bring back the energy people are lacking when they begin to exercise and become fit.

The third excuse is it is going to hurt. Megan says there is truth to that statement but as a physiotherapist she does not adhere to the slogan “ no pain no gain,” what she prefers is the slogan “good pain now, not bad pain.” What she means by that is if a person exercises and is sore all over the following day that person has probably overdone it. She recommends getting a personal trainer to help design a tailor made exercise program for maximum benefit with the least amount of discomfort especially in the initial days.

The fourth excuse is exercise is boring. Yes, it can be, but doing things like listening to a headset while working out can take the boredom away.

The final excuse is I hate my gym. If this is the case talk to staff see if there are ways that can change to suit your needs, if not find a new gym, quit the gym not the exercise.

Goodlife Fitness Canada clubs are the largest fitness centers in Canada. In Montreal it operates with EnergieCardio fitness centers, which also happen to be the largest centers in Quebec. To find out more information about the fitness center click here:
